Product Description

Continent cards exercise in Montessori geography consists two sets of 7 cards each with the names, shape and size of the continents that are present on Earth. This exercise is meant for children to learn of the continents' names, their size, their shapes, major and bigger countries in each continents.

Purpose
  • To help the child learn the names of the continents.
  • To help the child understand which continent his/ her country belongs in.
  • To help the child understand different continents' shapes, sizes and countries in them.
  • To help the child be aware of different continents present today.
Exercise
  • Demonstrate the exercise by bringing the complete set and placing it on the mat.
  • Place one set on the left side and another on the right side.
  • Invite the children and tell them to sit around you while you demonstrate the continent cards exercise.
  • First, lay left set's continent cards on the mat randomly.
  • Start the exercise by picking a card using your thumb and index finger and show it to the children.
  • For example- if you have picked up the card of Africa continent, show them the shape it is in and also give them a substantial amount of information, such as “Africa is the world's second largest continent, and about the wild animals living in the African jungle, its unusual land and water formations, plants and importantly, people of Africa. By showing them the pictures of native African people, you can familiarize the children about people from different continents and countries.
  • Place the Africa Continent card in front.
  • Have the children look at the card and look at it for a few minutes until you move to the next continent card.
  • Now, pick another card randomly and if that happens to be Antarctica, then show the card to children and provide information such as Antarctica is the world's fifth largest continent, animals that live there, its unusual land and water formations, plants and people of Antarctica. Inform them that it is nearly impossible to live in Antarctica as the temperatures are too cold for humans to live and lead a regular routine life.
  • Now, place that Antarctica card next to Africa.
  • Next, similarly proceed to Asia, and give information such as Asia is the world's largest continent, animals, land and water formations, plants, food, clothing and people of Asia. Now, place the Asia card next to Antarctica card.
  • So, in the similar fashion finish showing the cards and information about the rest of the continents as well. For more information on remaining continents, you can provide information such as Australia is the world's smallest continent, it has animals such as Kangaroos, it is surrounded by water from all directions, plants and people of Australia. Then, Europe, which is the world's second smallest continent. animals, countries and their national languages, plants and people of Europe. Followed by North America, which is the world's third largest continent. And lastly, South America, which is the world's fourth largest continent.
  • As you are finishing up on the last card, make sure that all 7 cards are arranged in a horizontal order but not according to their sizes or shapes.
  • After you are done introducing the children to the continents cards and different information provided on each one of them, now proceed to the exercise of matching pairs.
  • Using your thumb and index finger, pick a random card from the right set of continent cards.
  • Have a good look at it to recognize the continent and place it exactly with the continent card matching.
  • Similarly, proceed to picking up another card.
  • As you can match the cards one by one, allow the child to try once with you.
  • Finish the exercise by matching all cards correctly. Repeat the exercise for practice.
