Product Description

Sandpaper globe is a globe with a raised sand section that represents land and a smooth blue surface represents water. It gives the child both a visual and sensorial impression of the land and water surfaces on Earth. This exercise in meant to give the children the understanding of what are the sizes of the continents, what is the area covered in water, what is the distribution of land and water looks like etc.

Purpose
  • To help the child to develop stereognostic sense.
  • To help the child to understand land and water regions better.
  • To make the child be aware of the distribution of size and mass of land and water.
  • To develop the child's concept of the shape of the earth.
  • To help the child visualize the area covered in water and land.
  • To prepare the child for the painted globe.
Exercise
  • Demonstrate the exercise by bringing the complete set and placing it on the table/ mat.
  • Invite the children to sit around you with their respective sets and watch you while you demonstrate the exercise.
  • Begin by placing the globe in front of you.
  • Tell the children to do the same, either on the mat or on the table.
  • Now, start the exercise by telling the children you would be learning what parts on the earth are covered with land and what parts are in water.
  • Tell the children, our Earth looks like this from space.
  • First, using your palms, touch and feel one of the rough surfaces.
  • Tell the children to do the same, and make sure that they are touching the sand surface on their respective globes.
  • Inform the children that this is part they are touching is land and this is the continent.
  • Similarly, proceed to touching and feeling another part. If it is a soft surface then it is water.
  • Tell the children that this soft surface is water region and this is ocean.
  • Again, proceed to choosing another land or soft surface and tell the children what part of the globe them and you are touching.
  • Make sure that you have touched and felt all the surfaces of the globe before proceeding ahead.
  • Now, tell the children, this is what the earth looks like and consists of in terms of land and water.
