Product Description

The brown stair activity is designed to teach the concepts of thick and thin. It consists of ten sets of wooden prisms with brown color finish. The brown stairs activity concentrates on, when put together from thickest to thinnest, they make an even staircase. Each stair is 20 cm in length and varies in thickness from 1 to 10 cm. There are 10 brown prisms of the same length of 20 cm in length but they differ in height. This activity is performed on a mat of contrasting color.

Purpose
  • To develop the child's visual discrimination of differences in two dimensions.
  • Visual discrimination of dimensions, such as thick and thin nature.
  • To refine voluntary movement.
  • To develop muscular education of grip.
  • To preparation for mathematics, for example- to prepare the child for later work in geometry and for the concept of numbers.
  • To demonstrating the unit differences in height and width between the ten successively thicker prisms.
  • To teach the child to build the brown stair form the thickest to the thinnest.
Exercise
  • Demonstrate to the child, how to hold the thinnest prism by gripping, how to hold the prism using your thumb, index and middle fingers.
  • Start by slowly sliding the prisms off of the shelves until it is fully out and place them randomly on the right side of the mat..
  • Steadily and precisely, place the prisms directly under the thickest to thinnest prism order and align them accordingly so that all the prisms are well aligned.
  • Once all are placed, check to see if they are well aligned by sliding your hand along the left side of the two prisms.
  • When they are in order, carry on placing all of the prisms in correct order accordingly and placing them so they come closer and closer to you as each is placed.
  • Dismantle the brown stairs by removing the thinnest to the thickest prism and placing them on the right half of the mat.
  • Invite and encourage the child to build the Brown Stairs .
  • Help him get started and start placing the prisms steadily and precisely as he/ she had learned. Correct him if necessary.
  • Allow the child to build the stairs individually as was shown in the demonstration Monitor and assist the child if needed.
Related Exercises

This can be related to the natural environment where the child arranges boxes, books, rolled charts, spoons, glasses and all possible variations in the environment.
