Product Description

Smooth and rough boards are included in the touch boards exercises for Montessori education. The smooth and rough boards consist of pieces of rectangular boards where the boards are separated differently and alternatively one part is polished and smooth and the other part is covered in sandpaper giving rough nature of the surface. Sandpaper is attached to a wood board. Various grading of sandpaper are used later as an extension of rough boards activity to help the child discriminate much easily, and the sides of the wooden board are designed to be the board with half the surface smooth and half rough.

Purpose
  • To stimulate the child's interest in texture in the environment by providing sensory experiences.
  • To develop language and communication as they respond during the activities.
  • To bring awareness about the idea of roughness and smooth surfaces.
Exercise
  • Demonstrate by inviting the children to gather around you while you start the exercise. First place the board in a secure table or mat and make sure that the surfaces are clearly visible to the children.
  • Gently place your hand on top of the rough half and gently stroke from top to bottom
  • Invite and let the child do the same.
  • Now, turn to the other side which is smoother. Similarly, gently stroke and encourage the child to do the same.
  • Remember to use proper terminology and language while teaching the child, starting from what side is called Rough and what side is called Smooth.
  • Repeat the activity few times and encourage the child to do it individually.
  • Monitor the child's activity and assist only when there is a necessity.
