Product Description

Large number cards exercise in Montessori mathematics consists of a box with large number cards with written symbols 1, 10, 100 and 1000 with colors specifically assigned as green, clue, red and green respectively. The cards are white in color and the numbers are written in the colors mentioned above.

Purpose
  • It helps the child to learn the names of written symbol.
  • To help the child understand the written symbols in hierarchy.
  • To help the child prepare for higher education and understanding of combining quantities with written symbols
  • To help the child gain a concrete understanding of units, tens, hundreds and thousands at this early age.
  • To help the child learn addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Exercise
  • Demonstrate the exercise by bringing the complete set and placing it on the mat.
  • Invite the children to gather around and sit to watch and learn the way this exercise is done.
  • Children will be doing the exercise simultaneously as it will help them to correct their mistakes when the teacher assists them when it is necessary.
  • Begin the exercise by first placing the cards using your thumb and index finger in the order of 1000, 100, 10 and 1 vertically.
  • Now, start the fundamental lesson by isolating the written symbol for 1 unit and tell the children that it is the written symbol of 1 unit.
  • Show the children how 1 is written and place the card back.
  • Now, proceed to picking up the next card of 10 by isolating the written symbol for 1 ten.
  • Tell the children this is a written symbol for 1 ten and show them how to write 10 and place the card back in its place.
  • Continue to pick the next card of 100 and similarly, complete the activity by showing the children how to write 100 and place the card back.
  • Complete this part of the activity by finishing to show how the 1 thousand unit is written and place is back.
  • Now, show the children the first period name lesson by isolating the large number card for 1 unit and tell them that it is 1 unit and tell the children to repeat it three times.
  • Show them how it is written using thumb and index finger with a pencil or chalk.
  • Similarly, repeat the activity with the rest of the symbols.
  • The second period lesson consists of arranging the large number cards at center in sequence horizontally.
  • First, show the children by arranging the large number cards at the center in sequence.
  • Now, ask the child to show you all the written symbols and place back the large number cards which were arranged randomly.
  • Now, the third period lesson consists of isolating the large number cards one at a time in random and asking the children what written symbol it is.
Related Exercises

The pre related activity for this exercise is the exercise of introduction to decimal system where, the child learns difference in hierarchies in a concrete manner. Here the child learns the hierarchies through abstract number cards but still it is put across to the child through the material which is graded in the size. The unit card being the smallest card and the thousand card being the largest one.

The understand of this activity leads the child towards the next activity i.e counting through using number cards.
